Redlands Event: Pet funeral parlor hosts lecture for animal history author

This post expresses the views and opinions of the author(s) and not necessarily that of The People's Redlands Post management or staff.

The world's first funeral parlor for pets is set to open this week in Redlands on  October 2. Under the name Precious Creature, the new establishment promises to be great value to grieving pet owners, an asset not just to the local community but also an example for others to follow. And the opening event will host a lecture on the history of pet cemeteries and animal memorials by Dr. Paul Koudounaris, whose book on the subject, Faithful Unto Death, will have only been released the day prior, but is already garnering worldwide press notices.

Regarding Precious Creature, it is the work of Lauren Kane, a taxidermist from Redlands who gave up a traditional workshop practice to focus only one domestic pets, designing memorials which help animal owners through the trauma of mourning. Her pets only funeral parlor is a unique new idea intended to “provide thoughtful and judgment free services to families experiencing the loss of a pet.” Her services will “span simple memorials like recording paw or nose prints, to full body taxidermy preservation,” and she is capable of working with clients to design a wide variety of other memorial types.

Regarding Dr. Koudounaris and his lecture at the opening event, his book Faithful Unto Death is the first ever book written on the history of pet cemeteries and animal memorials. It will be released in the USA on October 1, but has already received write ups from outlets as notable as Smithsonian, BBC Culture, and The Telegraph. He says the goal of the book, which he will detail in the lecture, is that while “people often feel lost and alone when mourning a pet, the grief is one that is universal and known throughout the world in every culture. The book shows, in photos and touching stories, how people who have loved and lost companion animals have paid tribute to them so that they can live in memoriam.” Regarding the opening of a funeral parlor for pets, he says, “this is something that is truly historic. Animals that have lived as family members deserve the same dignity in death as a human relation, yet they have consistently been denied that by being deemed ‘only a cat or dog.’ The opening of Precious Creature as a funeral parlor for pets is an important step in giving recognition to pets as true family members.”
